Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy feels unique in the current comic book movie climate, in that it actually has an ending. Rather than the likes of the MCU and DCU going on and on in the same style as the comics with never an end in sight, Nolan knew exactly when to finish his story.

The most infamous cliff-hanger ending from The Dark Knight Rises is what really happened to Bruce Wayne, though this is arguably answered by the fact that he himself fixed the autopilot on the Bat six months prior to disappearing. What isn't properly answered in the movie, is what John Blake does next.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character has the final scene in the trilogy, heading into the Batcave, but what does he do next? It's left wide open to interpretation, but after confirming his real name to collect his inheritance, many assumed he would go on to become either Robin or Nightwing.

This is not the case, as per the actor himself. In an interview with Cinemablend, Gordon-Levitt confirmed that Blake went on to become Batman. The entire ideology behind Christian Bale's iteration of the character is that anyone could have been Batman, it didn't have to be Bruce Wayne. In this regard, Blake taking on the cowl rather than becoming a new hero makes perfect sense.
