For truly riddikulus endings, reveals, plot twists and cliffhangers, the Fantastic Beasts series' second entry, The Crimes Of Grindelwald, takes the boggart's biscuit.

Having triumphed over the heroes, dark wizard Grindelwald (a scenery-chewing, peroxide blonde Johnny Depp) whisks away walking plot device Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller) to Nurmengard Castle. Here, he 'restores' to him the name of Aurelius Dumbledore - the long lost brother of legendary wizard and Hogwarts headmaster to be, Albus Dumbledore - in a twist so absurd and unwarranted that it can only have been siphoned straight from the notebooks of Warner Bros' chief accountant.

The logic-defying ending is self-assured in thinking this is a clever twist, but the conclusion of the second Beasts adventure reeks of bad plotting and an overarching desire not only to connect these films further with the main Potter series, capitalising on the money and success those films drew, but also to trap audiences into seeing its sequels.

As might be expected, fans have been at best perplexed and at worst hatefully aggressive in response to this new revelation. However, with merchandise, cinema ticket and home media sales continuing to draw in the big bucks for the Potter universe at large, this express doesn't show signs of slowing down any time soon.
