10 Infuriatingly Stale Actors That Should Try Something Different For A Change
8. Tom Cruise
Around the turn of the millennium, it appeared as though Tom Cruise was making a serious effort to establish himself as a critically-acclaimed actor, and not just the A-list movie star with the megawatt grin.
Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia and Vanilla Sky showed the actor showcasing previously-unseen range and depth, but it wasn't long before he reverted to type as the ultra-charismatic showman that headlined a string of action-heavy blockbusters.
There was a time when Cruise didn't exclusively star in projects that required him to put his life on the line in the name of our entertainment, but barring his cameos in Tropic Thunder and Rock of Ages, 2007's Lions for Lambs was the last time he was forced to rely entirely on his acting talents, and that movie bombed hard.
Michael Mann's Collateral showed how spectacular the results could be if the Mission: Impossible star plays against type, and it remains infuriating that he hasn't even attempted to do so again since, even after nearly two decades of essentially playing the same role over and over again.
