10 Ingenious Uses Of End Credits Songs In Movies
1. Jai Ho – Slumdog Millionaire
Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire is often mis-categorised as a joyful film, not helped by the poster's tagline "the feel-good film of the decade" in larger font than the title. However, this underdog story of an Indian boy who manages to triumph against impossible odds, is anything but feel-good.
Despite being a fantastic film, Slumdog Millionaire deals with child prostitution and child mutilation among other difficult subjects. Part of the reason for this Oscar-winning films being mis-categorised, alongside the marketing department trying to sell more tickets, is the final Bollywood dance number during the end credits. Boyle chose to leave audiences with an energetic dance performed by the main cast, perhaps to counteract the often bleak if ultimately uplifting tale that had unfolded over the last two hours.
As Dev Patel leads the cast to the infuriatingly catchy and joyful beats of Jai Ho, it is truly impossible not to finish the film with a smile on your face. Splicing images of the dancers in the abandoned train station with the end credits is also an ingenious way of keeping audiences glued to their seats until the film's main credits have ended.
