10 Insane Alternate Endings To 2017's Biggest Movies (So Far)
4. The House Burns Down - It Comes At Night
Another cheap horror movie that managed to elevate the genre and pull in a sizeable amount at the box office this year, It Comes at Night is an eerie mediation on survival set in the wake of an unnamed apocalyptic event.
After attempting to keep his family safe for the sum of the film, the picture ends in a low-key, albeit haunting, manner, with Paul (Joel Edgerton) sitting across the table from his wife in total silence after the off-screen death of their son after he contracts the infection. They, too, are infected - at least, it appears that way.
The tragic ending is one of the movie's biggest strengths, but it wasn't the original plan according to director Trey Edward Shults. Originally he wanted the film to culminate with a more explosive finale, with the house - where most of the action takes place - burning down. In his own words:
" I shot it. And we burned down a set, and it took me a while to finally cut it. I would show it to people and they'd be like, 'The movie is great, but what the hell is that ending?'"
You can understand why he made the decision to cut it, given that it could've clashed with the tone of the rest of the movie and spoiled it. The quieter ending is far more in line with what came before - not to mention it's way more open to interpretation, an aspect that little horror movies like this tend to thrive upon.
