10 Insane Castings That Almost Ruined Comic Book Movies

6. Sylvester Stallone As Superman

Stallone Lantern jawed futuristic law enforcement yes, but lantern jawed golden boy flying superhero? Maybe not. But that didn't stop Stallone lobbying hard for the role after the success of Rocky, before Marlon Brando personally intervened to veto him, which upset Brando so much he publically criticised the legendary actor. If you think about Stallone's iconic drawl spewing forth wholesome nuggets of All-American jingoistic dialogue, or him taking Lois Lane into his arms for a romantic kiss before flying off in his lycra suit, covering quivvering, almost over-blown muscles, it begins to sound quite good in a terrible, terrible way. But as a serious blockbuster to take advantage of the Superman profile, Stallone would have been about as far away from a good choice as is possibly conceivable. Had they made a spoof Superman, perhaps Stallone's B-Movie quality action movie past would have worked very well (perhaps he'll be cast in the inevitable Comic Book Movie when it arrives), but there is nothing in what Stallone did before or has done since that suggests he would have been a good choice. And the very fact that Brando - a man who was merely picking up a paycheck - still took the time and effort to veto Stallone says all you need to know about his suitability.
