7. A Shocking Box Office Drop-Off - Captain America: Brave New World

In 2024, Captain America: Brave New World became yet another post-Endgame MCU outing that underwhelmed both critically, and in particular commercially. Sam Wilson's (Anthony Mackie) leading debut brought in more than the likes of Thunderbolts*, but it was an undeniable flop for the studio.

Off-screen issues, and reshoots after reshoots led to the budget of Julius Onah's outing reportedly reaching an eye-watering $380 million. Taking into consideration marketing costs, bringing home just $415 million was an unmitigated disaster.

It may be unfair to compare the fourth Captain America outing to the third, Civil War, since the latter was released at the height of MCU popularity, and was essentially a third Avengers flick, but it is difficult not to since it is the very next film in that particular franchise.

Brave New World's $415 million total across its entire theatrical run was beaten and then some by Captain America: Civil War in just 12 days, by which time the film had grossed $673 million. Of course, Brave New World bringing in less than Civil War is not a surprise in itself, but such a significant drop-off is insane, and is indicative of the superhero fatigue that has seen such figures plummet across the entire genre.
