The Theory

Protagonist Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) didn't actually fall in love with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and join the Na'vi of his own free will, but because he was brainwashed after interfacing with Pandora's all-encompassing deity known as Eywa, as will be revealed in the sequel.

Why It Might Be True

The theory has been around in various forms for years, suggesting that Jake was only truly seduced to the Na'vi way of life after interfacing with the Tree of Voices, which connected him to Eywa and allowed Pandora's God to effectively "rewrite" Jake's mind.

If nothing else, it'd explain why Jake's personality shifts so suddenly after he mates with Neytiri, and would underline the implication that everything on Pandora is connected in the most intimate of ways.

It'd certainly make for a compellingly dark revelation in Avatar 2, as Jake is forced to reconsider his abandonment of his human body, his relationship with Neytiri, and making a home alongside the Na'vi.

But at the same time, it might just be a little too creepy a revelation for Cameron to want to deal with.
