High School Musical is the film that put Zac Efron on the map, endearing him to an entire generation of teenagers and quickly creating a springboard for him to become a mega-star in his own right.

It's impressive, however, when you consider the first movie's big secret - almost none of the singing performed by his character, Troy Bolton, was actually carried out by Efron himself.

Due to the part of Troy being written for a tenor but Efron being a baritone, the decision was made to have another singer who auditioned for the part, Drew Seeley, provide the vocals, while Efron would simply lip-sync over them during shooting.

Ultimately, Efron's singing voice can only be heard for a few lines in the songs "Start of Something New" and "Breaking Free."

However, Efron demanded to use his own singing voice in the second film and beyond, as proved beyond any doubt that he had all the chops necessary to play the part.

That it didn't cause more drama among the High School Musical fandom at the time, though, is genuinely shocking.
