10 Insane Movie Stunts They Filmed FOR REAL
1. Final Chase - Death Proof
Finally, we come to Death Proof. Released as a double Grindhouse feature alongside Planet Terror in 2007, it represents Quentin Tarantino's own take on the slasher genre. Its story is inspired by real life stunts with lead antagonist Mike McKay (Kurt Russell) brutally murdering hapless individuals with his rigged stunt vehicle.
The final chase is a white-knuckled thrill-ride. It pits three daredevils against McKay in the ultimate vehicle duel. Tarantino set out to make the best car chase of all time and it certainly ranks among the greats. He was incredibly impressed with stuntwoman Zoƫ Bell and decided to cast her in an acting role, a first for the action professional.
With Bell hanging off the hood at top speed as the vehicles clash, it really gets the adrenaline pumping at eighty to one-hundred mile per hour. Four Chevy Novas were used throughout the film alongside a Dodge Charger and it took six weeks to film the entire twenty minute sequence.
Bringing together some of the biggest names in stunt work including Buddy Joe Hooker (who worked on Terminator 2 and Scarface), Death Proof may be considered Tarantino's weakest production, but the film's climactic end sequence is a sight to behold.
