4. 'Rapunzel' Changed To 'Tangled' To...Appeal To Boys?
Similarly bizarre is Disney's decision to change the title of their Rapunzel movie from the protagonist's name to Tangled, apparently in an effort to make the film appeal more to boys as well as girls. Simply, though, how does this make the film any more appealing to boys in any way? Are studios so cynical that they think a mere word change is going to make young boys more interested in seeing a movie about a classic Disney heroine with super-long hair and the plucky guy who has to rescue her? Tangled
is a better title, but what masculine qualities does that connote, exactly? The smartest thing would have been to focus on the male suitor as much as possible, and just cement how utterly badass he is (whereas the trailers actually just made him look like a jackass...which he is).
