The original: Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is as impressive as an exercise in balancing copyright law as it is a hilarious, sometimes worrying animated/live action hybrid. Robert Zemeckis not only managed to direct a credible murder mystery starring Bob Hoskins and a cartoon rabbit, but he also managed to get countless Warner Bros and Disney characters to appear side-by-side in this celebration of the history of animation. And Christopher Lloyd being absolutely bloody terrifying. The sequel: Well, technically it's a prequel, but it's definitely insane. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? ended relatively happily, so bringing back the colourful, sunshine cast back for another somewhat gritty detective drama would've been a bit of a downer. So Nat Maudlin, best known for penning Eddie Murphy's Dr Dolittle, was contracted to right a film about Roger's work during the Second World War. Riffing on the history of Warner Bros and Disney propaganda cartoons produced during the forties, along with the Rabbit's early years, it would've involved Jessica Rabbit being abducted by the Germans and being forced to make pro-Nazi propaganda, with Roger and his crew forming the titular Toon Platoon to get her back.
