10 Insane War Movie Facts You Won't Believe Are Real
5. The Falls In Lone Survivor Used No CGI
Lone Survivor chronicles the true story of its titular character, Marcus Lutrell, the sole member of an elite Navy SEAL team left standing after a disastrous reconnaissance mission during the war in Afghanistan. An unflinchingly brutal depiction of proceedings that pays tribute to the real-life heroics of the men who inspired the film, Peter Berg's 2013 picture is an indispensable entry for any fan of the genre.
Chief amongst the brutality at the heart of Lone Survivor is the realism of the film's fall sequences. The movie depicts multiple instances where the SEALs tumble down the unforgiving slopes of a rocky mountainside in an attempt to evade their Taliban pursuers, capturing every bone-crunching moment of impact in sickening fashion.
The truly insane thing about these sequences? They weren't choreographed and used no wires. In an effort to cultivate an incomparable level of realism, the stunt actors were instructed to - quite literally - fall 20 feet down an array of cliff faces. These pieces of footage would later be edited together to appear as one continuous descent. Unsurprisingly, multiple stunt performers were injured during production as the falls were too difficult to control safely.
