10 Insane Ways Actors Prepared For Famous Movie Scenes
4. Andrew Garfield & Adam Driver Took A Week-Long Vow Of Silence To Understand Their Characters' Torment - Silence
Martin Scorsese's epic historical drama Silence revolves around two 17th-century Jesuit priests (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) attempting to spread the word of Christianity across Japan while seeking out their missing mentor (Liam Neeson).
Ultimately, both men are imprisoned and encouraged to renounce their faith on the threat of death.
This leads to Driver's Francisco Garupe drowning after refusing to apostasise, and at the end of the movie, Garfield's SebastiĆ£o Rodrigues reluctantly renounces his faith to spare his fellow Christians further torture, though still remains a Christian in secret.
In order to get into the difficult headspace of two men so fiercely committed to their faith, both Garfield and Driver spent a week at a Jesuit retreat in Wales, where they undertook a week-long vow of silence as they studied Jesus' life, death, and resurrection.
When the two inevitably crossed paths in the halls of the retreat, they simply waved at one another and continued to go about their preparations. Have you ever tried not to speak for even a day? It's tougher than it looks. But a week? Madness.
