10 Insanely Hyped Movies That Flopped HARD

3. Steve Jobs

Apple-flavoured biopic Steve Jobs was plagued by behind-the-scenes issues from the get-go and when director David Fincher dropped out of the project amid rumours of a fee dispute, its problems were only compounded. The hype, however, returned with a vengeance when Oscar-winner Danny Boyle stepped up to replace him.

Steve Jobs was a recipe for success on paper: there was a critically-acclaimed filmmaker at the helm, Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet leading a solid cast, and the subject matter should, in theory, have pulled in the iPhone-loving masses.

All of the above did result in widespread critical praise, glowing reviews across the board and a stack of awards, including a BAFTA and two Golden Globes, as well as Oscar nominations for Fassbender and Winslet at the 2016 Academy Awards.

Yet, none of that translated to financial success during the film's cinematic run. A return of just $17.8 million against a $30 million budget suggests it was the most overlooked Apple product since the Pippin. Overseas takings did push its overall box office haul to $34 million, but with marketing costs factored in, that's a paltry figure.
