10 Insanely Intense Films Any Horror Fan MUST See
7. Ichi the Killer
Virtuoso Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike has certainly kept himself busy over the last thirty years. He’s made over a hundred movies, including children’s entertainment and period pieces, and has made a name for himself as one of the most inventive and consistently boundary-pushing filmmakers in the world. No list like this would be complete without acknowledging the powerhouse of visceral filmic genius that is Miike.
His most intense and controversial film remains Ichi the Killer, a garish kaleidoscope of sadomasochism and torture set against the backdrop of an ultraviolent yakuza drama. Warring gangs clash and body parts fly. The main character (who confusingly is not Ichi, although he is a killer) cuts his own tongue out. You’ll never look at a sliding glass door in the same way.
Bonus shoutout: while you’re looking through Miike’s filmography, do yourself a favour and make time for Visitor Q, another unsettling masterpiece that'll make your eyeballs itch. You won’t regret it. Or maybe you will. Either way, it's got to be seen to be believed.
