You’ve heard of body horror. Any horror fan can reel off the greatest technicians of classic disfigurement, splatter, and gore: David Cronenberg, John Carpenter, George A. Romero, Stuart Gordon…
But you haven’t seen body horror until you’ve seen Brain Yuzna’s 1989 masterpiece Society.
How do you explain this movie? Well, it’s a coming-of-age story which becomes a fever-dream of weird sexual psychodrama. It’s what would happen if a nice boy like Ferris Bueller or Marty McFly suddenly found himself in the middle of an alien orgy about to be consumed by his therapist. It’s a satire of the vulgar wealth inequality of the 1980s, but with loads of really weird and silly but darkly disturbing body horror jokes, and with perhaps the most iconic climax of all 1980s body horror.
