Ari Aster's recent horror smash Midsommar opens with a deeply unsettling sequence in which protagonist Dani's (Florence Pugh) sister Terri (Klaudia Csányi) commits murder-suicide by filling her family home with carbon monoxide, killing both herself and her parents.

It's a traumatic sequence which naturally rocks Dani to her core, with Aster chillingly cementing this throughout the rest of the movie.

Though Dani's fractured mental state is clear, Aster also goes to the lengths of hiding the haunting visual of Terri's dead face, including an exhaust pipe sticking out of her mouth, in the trees when Dani is being carried to dinner later in the movie.

It's an astoundingly subtle flourish, but one which will immediately send shivers up the spine of anyone who notices it. In fact, you might prefer that you didn't know this one, so sorry about that.
