10 Insufferable Rom-Com Leads That Don't Deserve Love

2. Dean Proffitt - Overboard

Love Actually Creepy
MGM

Overboard is a fun, light-hearted film from the 1980s, but when you actually sit down and think about the plot, it's pretty crazy that this movie ever got made. The main character is a poor carpenter who gets thrown of a yacht by a bored, spoiled heiress after she isn't happy with his craftsmanship and he tries to physically intimidate her into accepting the work as completed. Which is, like, fair.

But when she later falls off the boat and gets amnesia, he comes up with a plan. Because the best way to fall in love and find a new mother for your children is to lure a woman with a brain injury into your home and con her into being your personal slave. That's right. He shows up at the hospital claiming to be her husband, brings her home, and forces her to take up her role as housewife and mother to his children.

Which is so beyond screwed up it's hard to even fathom, especially since it's played for laughs and heavily implied that she deserves this treatment. And what's worth, at the end of the day, he gets the girl. She forgives him for his lies and manipulation. Maybe her brain injury was more severe than we thought.
