10 Intense Horror Movie Scenes You Couldn't Watch
2. Apostle: 1900s Brain Surgery
Having a rusty drill bit slowly inserted into the top of one's cranium is surely low on one's bucket list. Watching it happen to someone else can't be much higher. Keep that in mind if you sit down to watch Gareth Evans' 2018 period-horror.
Apostle follows the experience of Thomas Richardson (Dan Stevens), a former missionary who travels to a secluded Welsh island in the hopes of rescuing his sister from the clutches of a cult. His mission brings him into conflict with Malcolm Howe (Michael Sheen) and his group of fanatical devotees. This movie follows similar themes to the Wicker Man. Rather than burning their victims in a giant wooden effigy, however, the cultist devise all manner of horrific means to sacrifice them, in the hopes of making their island home fertile.
During one horrific 'purification' scene, a member of the cult is strapped to a table for all to see, before having a drill bit slowly fed into his brain. Although we're spared the ordeal of witnessing the actual insertion, the twitching legs of the victim and the cries of horror from the onlooking crowd are enough to make the event unbearable.
