10 Intense Horror Movies That Dared You To Sit Through Them
1. Inside (L'intérieur)
In Inside, a heavily pregnant widow, Sarah, discovers a deranged woman has broken into her flat, and is desperate to claim her unborn child.
Although horror properties tend to escalate scares gradually, the home invasion here begins with Sarah's unwanted visitor driving a scissors into her bulging belly before slicing her face in half.
That's how the story starts! And it only gets worse!
Despite the overwhelming gore, it's the focus on atmosphere that keeps pulses racing and spines tingling. Directors, Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, utilise tight shots and the cramped conditions of Sarah's apartment to create a claustrophobic ambience in every scene.
One component of Inside that many film directors should take note of is how it uses jump-scares without relying on sound or quick transitions. The most nerve-racking moments often involve a figure coming into focus subtly and slowly, so the audience isn't sure what they saw, leaving them well and truly rattled.
As incredible as Inside is, it's too brutal for some. Even if viewers can tolerate the relentless violence throughout, few will find themselves capable of stomaching the ruthless climax.
