Ghostland begins with Pauline's family moving into their newly inherited home, moments before they're attacked by two serial killers. Pauline kills the pair, but fails to stop the incident from having a profound effect on her daughters, Beth and Vera.

Beth channels the traumatic experience into her writing, allowing her to become a successful writer. Vera, on the other hand, has become so rattled by the event, she's convinced she's been imprisoned by the psychopaths ever since. When Vera tries to help her sibling deal with her psychosis, she soon realises the problem is far worse than she imagined.

What makes Ghostland so impactful is how viewers can never tell what direction it's going in next. One moment, it's a home invasion movie, then it's a survivor's tale, then it switches into a psychological drama, before reforming into a full-blown horror flick. Although the mercurial story structure could make Ghostland incoherent, it stops the movie from ever becoming predictable.

And just as viewers feel like they have some idea where the narrative is going, Ghostland hits them with a mind-blowing twist that'll leave them shocked for days.
