10 Intense Horror Movies That Dared You To Sit Through Them

4. May

Incident in a Ghostland
Lions Gate Films

May centres around a repressed vet, who's had insecurities about her lazy eye since childhood. For as long as she can remember, her only true friend has been her doll, Suzie. Although May thinks her luck will change when she meets a handsome stranger, her desperation to feel loved causes her to spiral out of control.

For the first half hour or so, May contains no scary elements (save for several references to a dog who's inexplicably lost his leg). Even when the creep factor gets going, May feels like a psychological drama at first, rather than a full-on horror flick.

Because of the slow-burn, it's all the more hard-hitting when things take a nasty turn, especially during one specific scene involving shards of broken glass and blind children.

As disturbing as this moment is, it's just an appetiser for what's to come. Although some horror films like to keep their big climax a surprise, it's made abundantly clear during the halfway point what May's endgame is. Despite the fact the ending is heavily foreshadowed, it doesn't make it any less sickening.
