Gyllenhaal's portrayal as Louis Bloom is uncomfortable and upsetting to look at. He's a slender-man with bug eyes, high cheek bones and he looks like he doesn't wash often. But when Louis opens his mouth and starts working with the scenery around him, that's when the audience is put on edge.
Louis is neither upset nor excited by what he films, and the way Gyllenhaal portrays that lack of emotion might be the most shocking part of his performance.
In a film that focuses on the exploitation of tragedies, Gyllenhaal's incredible performance is the most unsettling thing we see.
