9. River Phoenix Stand By Me
River Phoenix will always be one of cinemas great young losses along with James Dean and Heath Ledger. Already at the age of 23 hed impressed audiences with his performances in Running On Empty and Stand By Me, as well as taking on the iconic role of young Indiana Jones in The Last Crusade. You could even say his potential had already been fulfilled. The delights of Rob Reiners wonderfully nostalgic Stand By Me are the moments when the sensitivity of each character and the bravery of the sensitive characters are revealed. Most moving, is the scene where Wheatons Gordie consoles Phoenixs Chris as he angrily rants about having to take the blame for stealing milk money, all because he suffers from a bad reputation. His tough guy persona melts away and he breaks down in tears, showing how much betrayal and mistrust stings, even to those who seem apathetic. Then the film punches you in the gut again when its revealed that none of the boys, who bonded so fondly here, have spoken since.
