10 International Smash-Hits That America Somehow Hated

9. The Fifth Element

fifth 1997€™s cult futuristic sci-fi classic that saw Bruce Willis as a taxi driver saving the world from a nefarious Gary Oldman with a ridiculous hairdo did not exactly make a killing at the box office domestically. Despite having an entire language conceptualized within it and Chris Tucker in a hilarious wardrobe the film really did not catch on stateside at all until it slowly became a cult hit. Unlike something feeling like Star Wars, The Fifth Element was a very idiosyncratic and hamfisted take on the genre. The charm and fun lies in how stupid it all is; something audiences caught on to with DVD and Blu-Ray releases. While the production budget is still unknown it is safe to say that $60 million lifetime did not meet expectations. Internationally it made a killing grossing over $200 million. The Fifth Element is also the first of two items on our list starring Ukrainian actress Milla Jovovich
