Learning English when you were raised to speak German is difficult; learning to speak English with a Texas drawl during just a film's pre-production period is even harder. But Nastassja Kinski, daughter of professional mad man and Herzog-botherer Klaus Kinski, managed it for Wim Wenders's Paris, Texas, in which the actress plays the estranged wife of a man stricken by a sudden onset of amnesia (Harry Dean Stanton). It's not the first time Kinski attempted to learn an accent other than her own for an English-speaking film role - for Roman Polanski's Tess, the Berlin-born actress was sent to London to work with a dialect coach in order to learn a Dorset accent. While that didn't come off with great success, Kinski's adoption of a Texan tongue for Paris, Texas is flawless.
