10 International Stars You Never Realised Weren’t American

7. Aidan Gillen - Irish

He might currently be struggling with whatever accent he's going for on Game Of Thrones, but one accent Aidan Gillen has never failed at nailing is American. On The Wire, something of a home for Brit actors goin' 'murican (Idris Elba's English?!), Gillen so successfully pulled off the Boston twang of Councilman (then Mayor) Thomas Carcetti that it was hard to believe the actor actually hailed from Ireland. While fellow countryman Michael Fassbender is currently in the process of trying to master each and every accent he can get his hands on, Gillen has the American drawl down pat. With The Wire his breakthrough in the US, most naturally assume Gillen is born and bred, when in reality his Irish brogue is so strong it won't actually allow him to play Petyr 'Littlefinger' Baelish with the British accent the character seems to be aiming for. Also known for his brief turn as a CIA agent in The Dark Knight Rises, see last year's Calvary or 2013's Mister John for Gillen at his natural Irish best.
