10 International Stars You Never Realised Weren’t American
6. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau - Danish
Another actor well-known for Game Of Thrones, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau maintains a much more consistent, clipped English accent than Gillen in HBO's fantasy epic, playing Ser Jaime Lannister as a preening, arrogant knight and son of a lord. Movie audiences, meanwhile, might recognise Coster-Waldau from films like Black Hawk Down, in which he played real-life Delta Force soldier Gary Gordon, or The Other Woman (shudder), in which he played the philandering Mark. Not bad for someone who spent his young life in Denmark, being born and raised just outside of Copenhagen. Apart from the odd part taken in his native Scandinavia, Coster-Waldau mostly sticks to Hollywood now. Bizarrely, Coster-Waldau even does a Christian Bale and switches accents for interviews, making things even more confusing. Coster-Waldau speaks English with the refined air of British aristocrat, Lannister-style, when conducting interviews for Game Of Thrones, and likewise does interviews with an American accent for the promotion of films in which he plays an American character.
Lover of film, writer of words, pretentious beyond belief. Thinks Scorsese and Kubrick are the kings of cinema, but PT Anderson and David Fincher are the dashing young princes. Follow Brogan on twitter if you can take shameless self-promotion: @BroganMorris1
