10 Irresistible Movies Inspired By The Genius Of Shakespeare
10. Anonymous

We will begin with the most recent film on the list, Anonymous. The film dramatises the Oxfordian Theory which argues that Shakespeares output was actually the work of Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford.
My own scepticism of the theory aside, if you like your films dark (in regards to direction and lighting not necessarily thematically dark) and packed with back stabbing and intrigue, then the film presents a fun romp with plenty of intrigue. You may have to excuse its slight historically inaccurate embellishments but you still get the chance to enjoy Rhys Ifans and Derek Jacobi both giving solid performances as usual. Though beware, the films tagline Was Shakespeare a fraud? makes the film sound much more of an explorative documentary than it actually is.
