8. "I Love You, David." - An American Werewolf In London

What makes the final line from An American Werewolf in London so great is the fact that it's not portentous or doom-laden or sequel-baiting, but poignant, romantic and sad.

The film is remembered for incredible moments like the opening scenes on the Yorkshire moors and the transformation sequence - masterminded by makeup effects genius Rick Baker - but its emotional heart lies in the relationship between David and Alex.

On his second night in wolf form, David has caused mayhem on the streets of London and is cornered in an alleyway by the police. Before they can shoot him, Alex charges forward and tries to get through to David by confessing her love for him.

For a second, the wolf's snarling face softens and we see a glimpse of the human inside, but then the beast returns and lunges at Alex. The police shoot the wolf and it returns to human form. As David's dead body is revealed, Alex weeps.

Like the werewolf itself, this film is shocking and scary (as well as being very funny), but has a human heart.
