While the name of the "Triffid" could sound pretty menacing in some context that I cannot entirely grasp yet, couple it with the fact that it is the name of a relatively aggressive plant and all of its flair goes away. Why yes, the monsters of this movie are plants. I could just finish this entry right here and there would be no harm done, but such a short paragraph would make the entire article look bad. Let us discuss just how and why did these plants become dangerous. In short - it was the Russians fault. They created the triffid seeds and the plane that carried them crashed on American mainland, thus spreading them all over the country. The things were kept in check for a while, and their oil was used as a suitable replacement for any other, but this all changed during the weird meteor shower. The writer of the story (the book is supposedly pretty good) knew that these plants could pose no real threat when under control, so the meteor shower mentioned above rendered everybody who watched it blind. Because space magic and stuff. Understandably, blind people walked into plants quite alot and then these Triffids ate them. The movie ends with people discovering that sea water kills these aggressive ficus's. If you remember that the humans actually had control over them for quite some time and haven't gotten around to discovering this before, it makes this movie even worse.
