9. Sing (2016)

Sing 2016
Universal Pictures

In fairness to Sing, it had some dazzling moments of potential for what could have a thoroughly entertaining family flick. But it never quite reaches these heights because it’s bogged down by sluggish methods of trying to keep the story engaging.

In an anthropomorphic setting, the plot follows koala Buster Moon who is facing financial difficulties with his theatre. As a way of raising money, he attempts to save his venue with a singing competition and the prize money being £1000. His assistant Miss Crawly accidentally advertises the competition as ‘£100,000 winnings’ and the contest ends up with more participants than expected, but Buster goes ahead with the new incentive anyway.

From then on, it's just a showcasing of comical animals singing songs. The karaoke renditions are fine enough, but nothing truly outstanding (you can tell the actors were cast for their name rather than their voice). And it’s a shame, in a supposed musical movie, that there’s a lack of original songs. The characters are thinly developed and the ending is predictable.

The whole movie is essentially a reality show posed as a movie - it's nothing to be excited about.
