10 Least Deserving Oscar Winners Ever
8. Sandra Bullock: Best Actress
Sandra Bullock's performance as the suburban mum who takes in a homeless teen and sorts his whole life out for him didn't exactly set the world on fire. Based on a true story, the feel-good drama is more akin to a big budget television movie than a major motion picture.
While Bullock does a decent southern accent, there isn't a huge amount of depth to her take on Leigh Anne Tuohy. The performance is exceedingly bland and stereotypical, a criticism that can be applied to the film as a whole also. Bullock herself has admitted as much. Whilst promoting 2013's Gravity at the Toronto International Film Festival, she explained, "I didn't feel worthy of it when I got it, so I feel like, 'Okay, I'm going to spend the rest of my life hopefully earning it."
A household name in Hollywood, Bullock's win felt more like the Academy seizing the chance to award a star for their popularity rather than their performance. Newcomer nominees Carey Mulligan (An Education) and Gabourey Sidibe (Precious) both turned out stronger, more affecting performances. Sadly neither of them had big star name value like Bullock did.
