10 Least Terrifying Villains In Horror Movie History
5. Nothing - It Comes At Night
The trailers are partly to blame for this entry, as it totally led the audience down the wrong path. It Comes At Night's trailer portrays a story that examines a bunch of strangers huddled together in a house in the hills, while they try to keep out whatever the entity is "that comes at night." Even the film's title leads us to this belief and it seemed like a good premise.
But it was all just a lie, as there actually was no villain. Yep, that's right, there was nothing trying to get in, a door was left open and that's that. The closest thing that comes to a villain is a virus resembling bird flu. The film's director, Trey Edward Shults, tried to hose down the subsequent controversy about the non existent villains by stating that it was never his idea to make a horror film. Whatever!
The film is a reminder of the fine balance required in a horror flick of not revealing the villain too soon, but still ensuring the audience is well aware that the threat is real. Pulling the rug out from our feet and revealing that there was no actual threat just cheapens the whole experience and makes the audience feel ripped off rather than surprised.
