10 Lesser Known Comics That NEED To Be Movies
6. Descender
Descender is a comic that will make you cry, and also wish that you lived in space. The space opera is published by Image and was created by writer Jeff Lemire and artist Dustin Nguyen.
The first issue was released in March 2015 and was a hit with critics, comic fans and studio executives. In fact, around the same time as the release of the first issue, Sony Pictures quickly acquired the rights.
A coming of age story of an android named Tim-21 who is created to be the brother of a young human boy. The two are separated and meet the unique characters space has to offer. For Tim-21, this includes fan favourites Driller, a huge robot built for demolition, and a robotic dog, called Yappy bot by Driller.
The series is heavily inspired by sci-fi movies before it and builds on it with modern concepts. It feels like a droid led Star Wars story taking place during a droid resistance. The android's journey of discovery is almost like an iPhone going through self-actualisation.
Image is known for focusing on the artistic side of comic, thus the name Image. This the case here as the art compliments the story. The use of watercolours is unique and makes the comic feel dreamlike.
If the movie adaptation were to use this as an influence for the cinematography, the movie would offer a stunning visual representation of space unlike any other.
