10 Lesser Known Film Noirs You Need To See

9. Just Cause (1995)

Final Analysis
Warner Bros.

A much more recent entry in this list, Just Cause features Sir Sean Connery as a left wing former lawyer, Paul Armstrong, who is compelled to re-open a case involving the rape and murder of a young girl. Arriving in a small Florida community to investigate, Ferguson is opposed by Tanny Brown (Laurence Fishburne), a police officer who used unorthodox methods to secure a confession.

As Armstrong digs deeper into the case, he becomes convinced that an injustice has occurred, and manages to secure the release of Brown's prisoner. However, that is far from an end to the matter...

Just Cause plays out like a 1990s updating of the original Cape Fear and To Kill A Mockingbird, enjoying a twisting plot that went unappreciated at the time of its release. It also has a memorable non-Indiana Jones performance from Steven Spielberg's wife, Kate Capshaw, whilst Scarlett Johansson's second feature film sees her portraying Connery's daughter.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
