10 Lesser Known Film Fan Theories That Might Actually Be True
10. Rose Is An Unreliable Narrator Who Tells An Idealised Version Of Events - Titanic
The Theory: 101-year-old Rose's account of her time on the Titanic is an idealised retelling of events, altered by the inevitable rose-tinting (pun intended) that occurs when a memory is recalled 84 years after the fact. Why It Might Be True:Redditor Berserker87 notes how in Rose's story, all of the characters are drawn in broad strokes: Rose idealises Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) while making her fiancee Caledon (Billy Zane) out to be an unambiguous a**hole, and all the poor people are fun and laid-back, while the rich are uptight snobs. Rose naturally has forgotten much of the detail and emphasised, even romanticised the elements which stuck out to her most, in large part to justify the decision she made to leave Cal and get with Jack. The theory also suggests that Rose's story may be impacted by survivor's guilt, hence why most of the dead are seen favourably and many of the survivors are a**holes. But Why It Probably Isn't: Sadly the more likely solution is that James Cameron simply decided to write characters as broadly and blandly as possible to please a wide audience, and to his credit, that approach certainly paid off. As much as we want to believe that Titanic is a story with hidden layers, it probably isn't.
