10 Lessons Batman Vs. Superman Can Learn From Superman: The Animated Series

Superman: The Animated Series had some good ideas with regards to Superman and Batman's complex relationship.

The currently untitled sequel to Man of Steel has created a lot of debate in Hollywood and on the internet, mostly related to casting decisions for particular characters and the announcement that fellow DC superheroes Batman and (to a lesser extent) Wonder Woman would appear in this film. The idea of a movie featuring both of DC's most popular characters has been a dream of many fans, but the reality is starting to set in. Man of Steel was a very polarizing film, so people are skeptical at best of what Zack Snyder and company are going to do with this movie. Now that production has been delayed 10 months, the team are probably reviewing the script before they go into shooting. With that in mind, here are 10 lessons the screenwriters and director can learn from a small-screen example of Batman and Superman working together, as seen in the Superman: The Animated Series three-part episode "World's Finest..."

10. Introducing Batman To Superman's World

One thing the associated filmmakers should remember is that this is a sequel to a Superman film, not a Batman film. It is disheartening that they chose to include Batman in the second film, which could imply the creative team doesn't believe that Superman's mythology alone has enough material for good films. However, since Batman is going to be in this movie, it is important to ensure that his role is secondary. It should be an opportunity for Batman to exist in Superman's world. In "World's Finest," with the exception of a short scene at a Gotham City jewellery store, the entire story takes place in Metropolis. The story is literally about Batman interacting with the supporting cast and the environment of the Superman series. When this three part episode was repackaged for DVD sales as The Batman/Superman Movie, my young mind was confused thinking it wasn't much of a team-up movie and more of a Superman story with Batman in it. That is what this new movie needs to be.
