10 Lessons Comic Book Movies Can Learn From Guardians Of The Galaxy

2. Embrace Colour

You may not have realised it while watching the film, but Guardians is one of the most colourful films you've probably seen in a long time. While sci-fi classics like Blade Runner and Alien set the trend for dark and gritty looking films, part of James Gunn's visual manifesto for the film was to make Guardians as colourful as possible - while still retaining that gritty feel that characterises the majority of sci fi. The colour yellow is pretty underused in the genre, so in Guardians Gunn decided to use it to signify the good guys and everything associated with good. Not everything appears to be colourful however, with the film's opening world looking grey and barren. Yet if you look up at the sky the planet's atmosphere is beautiful, showing that there is always something brighter out there. Deep man. Whether you picked up on the symbolism or interesting colour palette or not, you did subconsciously, as it makes a massive difference to the atmosphere and the mood that the film creates. Bright colours are massively underused in modern film, and its highly refreshing to see such a colourful and visually striking super hero flick. This film is the antithesis of Sin City - and our eyeballs couldn't get enough.
