10 Lessons Comic Book Movies Can Learn From Guardians Of The Galaxy
3. Use Actual Sets, They Look Infinitely Better Than Pure CG
Let's get this out of the way first - there is (obviously) a load of green screen and CG in this film. As it is set in space (you may have noticed) this makes the use of CG kind of unavoidable. Yet there are some truly awesome sets featured here, and their seamless blend with its CG elements make the film so much more atmospheric and convincing. While good actors can deal with almost anything, there is no denying that acting in a fully fleshed out set is far more immersive for them than standing in front of a flimsy green screen. With most blockbusters opting for the latter, the film's awesome prison sequence stood out for being entirely shot on set. The prison in Guardians is called the Kyln, Gunn told MTV. The Kyln was an actual practical set composed of 350 thousand pounds of steel. The only way we could afford to build the set was because we went in, we built it, and then we melted it all down and sold it afterwards back as steel. And boy was it worth it? The prison scenes looked incredible, and are arguably the highlight of the film. Take note directors, make the effort to build real sets: the viewers will appreciate it and become more immersed in the film because of it - even if they don't realise why.
