10 Lessons DC Needs To Learn From Batman V Superman

8. Emotional Climaxes Need To Be Earned

One of the inherent flaws with starting a cinematic universe is that audiences simply don’t care enough about these characters yet. Unlike the heroes of the MCU, who have been around for years and a multitude of movies, Batman and Superman, these versions at least, are still new faces.

In particular, a scene like the “Martha” reveal needed to be re-examined by the top brass. Captain America: Civil War carried a similar moment but its climax worked because Marvel had spent years building up the relationship between Iron Man and Cap.

That film earned that emotional climax. Conversely, Batman and Superman’s relationship was largely non-existent in the film, and thus,, that sort of emotional connection failed to have the desired effect on viewers.

In time, these problems may dissipate as the characters become more familiar. The key here isn’t for DC to give up on capturing emotion in their films, but simply finding more organic ways of doing it.

Once we care more about these characters, and these events start to feel more natural, fans will celebrate these emotional moments. It's just going to take a bit more character development on DC's end or else fans are never going to care about what happens to any of them and these climaxes will continue to fall flat.
