10 Lessons DC Needs To Learn From Batman V Superman
3. Get The Villain Right
One of the lynchpins of a great superhero movie is a strong villain. Think of Joker in The Dark Knight or Loki in The Avengers as prime examples of how a memorable baddie can elevate the entire film around them.
DC was off to a very promising start in this regard with Zod in Man Of Steel. He wasn’t a perfect character, but he was still very interesting and showed they had the right idea when it came to crafting antagonists.
Unfortunately, Batman v Superman seems to have taken a step back in this regard. Lex Luthor and Doomsday were both horrifically executed, not just because they lacked faithfulness to the comics, but because they were uninteresting and poorly characterized in general.
When it comes to future villains like Jared Leto’s Joker and potentially the likes of Steppenwolf, Darkseid and more, DC needs to seriously get their act together and make them both compelling and fearsome. They need to be constructed as fleshed-out characters with believable motives and not just excuses to move the plot forward.
If they fail to do this again, then none of the threats the heroes face will feel like they’re worth the audience’s time. If DC can turns things around, however, then every future movie will carry a danger that audiences will really care about.
