10 Lessons Star Wars Episode 7 Can Learn From The Prequels

8. Bogged Down With Unnecessary Exposition

The Star Wars prequels are remembered for lots of talking, planning, scheming, backstories, origin stories, and the like. If you were to remove the lightsaber fights and battle scenes, you€™d end up with an intergalactic All the President€™s Men. George Lucas dedicated an enormous amount of screen time in the prequels trying to explain the convoluted political plot. He also took it upon himself to illuminate us as to the origins of as many characters from Episodes IV, V, and VI as he possibly could. The results were at times overblown and unnecessary. Those scripts lacked a succinctness they desperately needed. Boba Fett€™s story was needlessly heavy-handed. Fans couldn€™t buy the idea that Anakin built C-3PO in his garage. And Padme€™s reminiscences of her school field-trips didn€™t do anything to further her character. Star Wars Episode VII needs to get back to its roots in old fashioned storytelling. By focusing on the characters and telling us their stories, the background exposition will take care of itself.
