10 Lessons Star Wars Episode 7 Can Learn From The Prequels

9. Space Opera Or Political Melodrama?

Remember the Trade Federation? Who can forget them? Remember the issues surrounding the blockade? We don€™t either. The prequel screenplays were too heavy-handed, much more political and "messagey" than the original episodes IV, V, and VI, which were focused more on story and character. In attempting to ground the Star Wars prequels into a logical sociopolitical universe, George Lucas lost touch with the grandiose operatic elements that fans came to identify with Star Wars. It was space fantasy, with the common themes of good versus evil, pirates and princesses, and ultimately redemption. To satisfy its fan base, Star Wars Episode VII can€™t take itself too seriously. At its core, Star Wars embraces themes that resonate with audiences of all ages. While it will no doubt have plenty of action and spectacular special effects, one of the most important things the film can deliver in 2015 is a return to its fantastic and mythological roots.
