Blade Runner is a strange film. It's a sci-fi, neo-noir classic from director Ridley Scott that has had so many different cuts released over the decades that it's a bit hard to keep up. Originally released in 1982, it wasn't until 2007 (!) that the world got the cut that Scott would deem 'final' and put his official approval on.

Blade Runner 2049 is an even stranger film. It takes the world of the original film in exciting new directions and pushes the boundaries of what was established. Director Denis Villeneuve came at the project with a distinct affection for the original film, while also being more than willing to challenge the craft and story of that film. Which is how you get a very-nearly-three-hour-long crime noir epic about an android thinking he's Jesus.

2049 is a genuinely enthralling film that expands upon the original film's thematic material in surprising ways. Roger Deakins' cinematography is jaw-dropping, Ryan Gosling delivers a subdued yet powerful performance, and Ford delivers one of the greatest performances of his entire career.

It's the kind of dream sequel to niche sci-fi property that fans fantasize about; one where high-profile talent comes on alongside the original cast and crew and creates a story that builds on the narrative, the form, and the theme in inspired fashion.
