10 Long-Gestating Movie Sequels That Were Worth The Wait
3. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Years Waited: 7
Welcome to the James Cameron section of the list, wherein we dissect Cameron's master plan to sequels. Apparently, it is: wait seven years, increase the number of things in the title, turn the protagonist from the first film into a battle-hardened heroine, and put the action on steroids.
Whereas the first Terminator film was an intimate sci-fi thriller that made the most out of a low-budget, Terminator 2 is a bona fide action blockbuster. Having Arnold return as a good T-800 is an inspired choice after his scene-stealing role as the villain in the first film, and he gets to play up his persona much more here as John Connor teaches him how to fit in. Linda Hamilton is an obvious highlight as the iconic version of Sarah Connor, as is Robert Patrick as the nefarious T-1000.
This sequel is stuffed to the brim with incredible action sequences, all of which are rooted in character and emotion. Despite its two-and-a-half-hour runtime, the film is remarkably lean. Even as Cameron indulges in the action, the film's restraint is masterful, trimming any scene that didn't absolutely need to be there.
This sequel also gets bonus points for closing out the franchise on a high note. Cameron delivers the perfect ending to his franchise here, as the T-800 sacrifices himself to save the world, but more importantly, to save John Connor from his fate.
It's not this film's fault that that ending would go on to be undone by three (going on four) disappointing sequels.
