10 Lord Of The Rings Book Characters We're Thankful Were Left Out Of The Movies
9. Fredegar "Fatty" Bolger
After Frodo learns he is in possession of the One Ring in the first film, Gandalf the Grey commands him to leave the Shire to meet the high elf, Elrond, in Rivendell. But after his gardener, Samwise, overhears their conversation, he convinces Frodo to let him join him. Just as they leave the Shire, they bump into two hobbits, Merry and Pippin, who also agree to aid Frodo in his quest.
But in the book, Frodo and Sam bump into three hobbits; Merry, Pippin, and Fredegar "Fatty" Bolger. When Bolger learns what Frodo is up to, he agrees to look after the hobbit's home in Crickhollow to ensure no one learns about his mission. JRR Tolkien intended the portly hobbit to play a larger part in the plot but cut his role down so Bolger served as nothing more than Frodo's house-sitter.
It's obvious why this scene was removed. Bolger isn't an important character - even if you've read the book, you probably forgot he existed - although he does appear occasionally in The Fellowship of the Rin as a background character in the Shire scenes.
