10 Lord Of The Rings Book Characters We're Thankful Were Left Out Of The Movies
3. Tom Bombadil
Many people believe Tom Bombadil was removed from the first film because his character is unnecessary, but that's not the only concern.
The problem with Tom is he completely breaks the story.
This whimsical chap pops out of nowhere and casually showcases his godlike power. Not only is he as old as time itself, he is utterly immune to the power of the One Ring, showing to Frodo that he can hold it without succumbing to its evil. He also makes it vanish and reappear, and even wears it without going invisible; a feat no one manages at any point in the story.
Despite his incalculable power, Tom has no impulse to help the hobbits on the rest of their journey, saying he prefers to chill out with his wife, Goldberry.
During the council meeting, one of the elves considers giving the One Ring to Tom for safekeeping since he can resist its power. Elrond rejects this notion, believing Tom's carefree nature would cause him to misplace the ring.
He may be a fan favourite, but removing Tom was a wise choice. If we saw him effortlessly resisting the One Ring so early in the story, it would diminish the menace of Sauron.
