10 Low Budget Horror Movies With The Best Jump Scares

7. The Strangers

Home invasion movies are fairly cheap endeavours in terms of filmmaking. The confined setting means that the budget can be kept down to a minimum due to the lack of location filming. No other home invasion film creates tension and atmosphere quite like The Strangers.

With a budget of just $9 million, The Strangers stars Liv Tyler and focuses on a trio of psychopaths who attempt to break into a couple’s home. A great use of sound design and just perfect timing from director Bryan Bertino make the jump scares here incredibly impactful.

Perhaps the greatest comes in the second act when the male Stranger lunges for Tyler at the window. The mix of sound design, timing and the performance from Tyler really sell this jump scare and make it the best in a long line of scares that line the film.

It also helps that the design of The Strangers is one of the best in recent memory. The masks are simplistic which adds to the reality the film presents the audience with. A stellar cast, terrific directing and some superb scares makes The Strangers an impeccable piece of horror cinema.
